A 31-year-old Singaporean man without qualifications pleaded guilty to severe child abuse of a six-year-old foreign national student under his care, including over 620 hanger strikes and prolonged torture, causing life-threatening injuries. He also abused other students and faced charges for causing grievous hurt and misleading authorities.

The abuse, which targeted several students, included repeated physical violence, extreme physical restraints, and psychological torment. One six-year-old Chinese national student suffered the most severe and sustained attacks, resulting in life-threatening injuries. The perpetrator, who had no teaching or childcare credentials, was responsible for the daily supervision and English and mathematics instruction of primary-school-aged children residing at the facility. Court documents revealed a pattern of brutal punishment.
The man repeatedly struck the young boy with a hanger more than 620 times and stomped on his back and buttocks over 45 times. On March 9, 2023, while other children ate dinner, the victim was forced to maintain a push-up position from 3:45 p.m. until the next morning.
During this prolonged torture, the man stomped on the boy at 1:15 a.m. and placed a chair on him between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m. He contacted the boy's father the following day, deceptively seeking permission to discipline the child without disclosing the nature and severity of the abuse already inflicted. After receiving consent, he continued the assault throughout the day, preventing the boy from attending school.
Medical examinations determined the child sustained rib fractures, extensive bruising all over his body, and a lung injury from blunt force to the chest. The abuse also caused severe rhabdomyolysis, a dangerous breakdown of muscle tissue, and severe hypertension leading to acute kidney failure. Shockingly, even after his aunt, the facility's owner, returned in the evening and instructed him to stop, he persisted in hitting the child. This was not an isolated incident.
In January 2023, the man subjected another student to a three-hour forced push-up position while beating him with a hanger. His actions eventually came to light after the injured boy's teachers observed his condition and notified his parents, who then lodged a police report on March 3. Beyond the child abuse charges, the man faced an additional count of voluntarily causing grievous hurt and one count of providing false or misleading information to the Ministry of Manpower.
The case has raised serious concerns about the oversight of private educational and boarding facilities housing vulnerable foreign students and the due diligence applied in hiring personnel for such critical caregiving roles
