Singaporeans flocked to Japan in 2024, marking a record-breaking year for tourism. The Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO) Singapore Office reported a 16.9 percent increase in visitors from 2023, with a total of 691,100 Singaporeans visiting Japan. The JNTO attributes this surge to a stronger Singapore Dollar, increased flight availability, and promotional efforts focused on lesser-known regions.

Visitors from Singapore to Japan surged by 16.9 percent from 2023 to reach a record-breaking 691,100 in 2024. This significant growth underscores the enduring popularity of Japan as a travel destination among Singaporeans. According to the Japan National Tourism Organisation ( JNTO ) Singapore Office, December 2024 witnessed particularly impressive visitor numbers, with a 19.8 percent year-on-year increase.

A staggering 136,200 Singaporean visitors flocked to Japan in December, accounting for nearly 20 percent (19.7 percent) of the total annual travel volume. The JNTO attributes this remarkable surge to a stronger Singapore Dollar against the Japanese Yen, making Japan more affordable and appealing to Singaporean travelers. Additionally, increased seat availability between the two countries, enhanced promotional activities, and a focus on promoting lesser-known regional destinations within Japan have contributed to the strong performance. Takuya Shiraishi, executive director of the JNTO Singapore Office, emphasized that the organization will continue to promote travel to Japan's regional areas while carefully managing overtourism. He also highlighted the upcoming World Expo in Osaka, scheduled from April 13 to October 13, 2024, as a significant driver of further interest in Japan. The Expo, featuring diverse exhibits, cultural performances, and global dialogues, is projected to attract millions of visitors. Recognizing the importance of responsible travel, the Japan Tourism Agency has launched an initiative titled 'Travel etiquette for the future.' This initiative aims to promote respectful behavior and encourage visitors to adhere to 'responsible travel' practices in Japan. The guide provides practical suggestions such as obtaining permission before taking photos, disposing of trash properly, and avoiding taking luggage into crowded spaces.
