A massive sinkhole swallowed a truck driver near Tokyo, prompting evacuations and a rescue mission that has been temporarily halted due to dangerous conditions.

Near Tokyo , residents living close to a massive sinkhole were urged to evacuate on Sunday, February 2nd, as efforts to rescue a man trapped inside were halted. A 74-year-old truck driver was swallowed by the cavity on Tuesday, February 26th, and it has since expanded to an enormous 40 meters across, almost the length of an Olympic swimming pool. Local authorities issued evacuation requests for five households situated near the hole in the city of Yashio, in the Saitama region.

This follows prior requests for residents within a 50-meter radius of the cavity to also evacuate. On Saturday, Japanese rescuers completed construction of a 30-meter slope to allow heavy equipment to reach the trapped truck driver. However, a significant amount of sewage water was discovered beneath the slope, which, combined with rainfall, resulted in the suspension of the rescue mission on Sunday, according to public broadcaster NHK. Due to the eroding walls of the hole, estimated to be approximately 15 meters deep, rescue workers are unable to remain inside for extended periods. The initial size of the hole was about 5 meters in diameter, but it merged with a larger cavity that opened during the rescue operation on Tuesday night
