TAIPEI - Sirens rang out, roads emptied and people were ordered to stay indoors in Taiwan's capital Taipei on Tuesday during an annual air-raid exercise simulating a Chinese missile attack.
People participate in the annual air-raid exercise, where people are ordered to stay indoors for 30 minutes in Taipei on July 23.
An alert, asking people to evacuate to safety immediately, was sent via text message for the exercise named Wan'an, which means everlasting peace. Taiwan President Lai Ching-te, who China reviles as a"separatist", rejects Beijing's sovereignty claims and says only Taiwan's people can decide their future. He has repeatedly offered talks with China but has been rebuffed.
