The girls said they drank water from leaves and ate cereal bars during their ordeal.

Two young girls lost in the woodland of North California for nearly two days may have survived their ordeal with the help of wilderness training, local law enforcement reported Sunday.

Piercy Fire Chief Delbert Crumley and firefighter Abram Hill found the girls huddled under a shrub after following their boot tracks. At least 14 agencies were involved in the search and rescue effort, according to local authorities. Founded more than a century ago, 4-H is a large network of youth groups and extra-curricular programs that aims to foster leadership abilities among young people and teach them practical skills. Delivering its message to nearly six million U.S. kids, 4-H reports it is the largest youth development organization in the country. 4-H did not immediately respond to Newsweek’s request for comment.
