CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Playhouse Square is bringing the best of live theater to Cleveland for the 2022-23 KeyBank Broadway Series. The lineup, announced Tuesday, features seven shows, including two of the most popular musicals of all time and the two most recent Tony Award winners for Best Musical. Five of the shows are coming to town for the first time.
Playhouse Square, the largest performing arts center this side of New York City, has been on a journey of its own after being closed for 15 months due to the COVID-19 pandemic before reopening last June. Its 101-year-old theaters have come alive once again with shows like “The Lion King,” “The Prom,” “Wicked” and “Pretty Woman” gracing the stage. Vernaci said attendance has been “very strong,” but cautions the comeback isn’t complete yet.
Up next is the spooky, quirky and heartwarming musical “Beetlejuice,” inspired by the 1988 Tim Burton film and running Jan. 10-29, 2023.Originally scheduled to come here as part of the 2020-21 Broadway series, “Hadestown” The schedule keeps on rolling with “Tina - The Tina Turner Musical,” playing April 25-May 14, 2023. Featuring Turner’s timeless music, the inspiring show follows her rise from humble beginnings to rock and roll legend.“Moulin Rouge!” has been reimagined for the stage and headed to Playhouse Square on June 7-July 2, 2023. The 2021 Tony Award winner for Best Musical is about a pair of star-crossed lovers who break out in mashups of classic Top 40 hits when the mood strikes.
