A compassionate SMRT bus captain displayed remarkable courage by extinguishing a burning car near KK Women's and Children's Hospital, even risking a minor injury in the process.

SMRT bus captain Yau Minddin Bin Muhamad encountered a car engulfed in flames near KK Women's and Children's Hospital on August 17. Although he hesitated for a brief moment, his concern for the potential occupants drove him to act. Yau was driving bus service 960e back to Woodlands Depot when he witnessed the burning BMW along Bukit Timah Road. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, he stopped his bus at a nearby stop, grappling briefly with the decision to intervene.

\'If my family or our colleague was trapped there, I cannot just ignore and leave it...if something happened explosion, I cannot forgive myself,' he recounted. Armed with a portable fire extinguisher from his bus, Yau sprinted across the road to confront the blaze. His first priority was to ascertain if anyone was trapped inside, emphasizing that the individuals' identities were irrelevant in the face of such danger. Upon confirming that the car was unoccupied, Yau directed the extinguisher at the flames consuming the car's front engine. \However, after five minutes of battling the blaze, a small explosion occurred, depleting the fire extinguisher's contents. Yau intended to continue with another bus captain, who had also arrived to assist, using a second extinguisher, but a police officer advised against it due to the escalating fire. Both bus captains subsequently withdrew from the scene. Yau later discovered he had sustained a minor burn on his hand from the explosion. Despite the injury, he expressed contentment with having helped, stating, 'Whether people know or not, or whether they appreciate, It's not important.' Thankfully, no other injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation
