Social distancing is changing the way people use dating apps:
to be worth $12 billion by the end of 2020. In an industry that has thrived on its offer a quick fix, people are now trying to navigate the concept of delayed gratification.
“We’ve seen a pretty heavy spike in usage, particularly over the last weekend,” says the app’s founder, Robyn Exton. “HER runs a lot of in-person events which we've cancelled, but we are running a whole series of online events in the app this week which have had an amazing response.” “We are seeing a shift to more intentional conversations at scale,” says Adam Cohen Aslatei, the CEO of S’More. “Hopefully if there could be any silver lining here it’s that people are eager to connect with one another on a deeper level. It's important to note that social distancing does not mean emotional distancing.” By contrast, he believes that activity on casual dating apps will decrease as people realize they can’t actually get together to hook up.
She also noted that over the past couple of years swiping fatigue has begun to put people off. As I reported recently, dating apps have beenin order to entice singles back to their platforms. An emerging trend among users, wrote Thomson, was that “dates began cutting the convo completely and opening the chat with a request to meet up immediately.” Now, social distancing has forced people to take a slower approach.
