But experts say established terror groups are finding it harder to recruit online because of content moderation by social media platforms, and monitoring and disruption by law enforcement agencies. Prof Droogan admitted that it is hard to know why these online communities appeal to young people, especially as it is difficult to research or interview young people in Australia due to ethical constraints.
Unlike the threat during the height of the danger posed by terror groups such as ISIS and Al-Qaeda, Mr Burgess said, extremism has become “much more diffuse – and much more diverse”.“As a nation, we need to reflect on why some young teenagers are hanging Nazi flags and portraits of the Christchurch killer on their bedroom walls, why others are sharing beheading videos in the schoolyard and, more concerningly, why there are young Australians willing to kill in the name of their beliefs,” he said.
Intelligence agents and security experts believe that the disturbing trend is reflected in the growth of extremist online communities, which are fuelling the radicalisation of Australia’s youth.
