Solberg Leads Sardinia Rally as Evans Nears WRC Title
Elfyn Evans, Oliver Solberg, World Rally Championship

Oliver Solberg takes the lead in the Sardinia Rally, but Elfyn Evans remains on course for his first World Rally Championship title with a provisional six-point advantage.

Toyota's Oliver Solberg seized the lead in the World Rally Championship finale in Sardinia on Saturday, but teammate Elfyn Evans remained on course for his first title. Hyundai's overnight leader Thierry Neuville crashed out on stage 11, ending a tight battle with Solberg and sending the Swede well clear at the top of the leaderboard. The Alghero-based Italian round is the 13th and final rally of the season after the Saudi Arabia finale was cancelled due to conflict in the region.

Neuville Crash Shakes Up Rally

Thierry Neuville's crash on stage 11 ended his rally and handed the lead to Oliver Solberg. Neuville had been leading overnight but his exit blew the championship battle wide open with four stages still to come on Sunday. Solberg now leads by 33.6 seconds from teammate and reigning nine-time world champion Sebastien Ogier. Sami Pajari is third, while Evans is fifth.

Evans had been fourth going into the day's closing stage but lost the place to Hyundai's Adrien Fourmaux, who won the stage. Fourmaux is 52.1 seconds behind Pajari. The Welshman started the rally 17 points clear of Finland's Sami Pajari, also in a Toyota, and 21 clear of Solberg. As things stood on Saturday evening, Evans remained on course for the title with his lead reduced to a provisional six points but plenty of potential pitfalls ahead.

Evans Eyes First WRC Title

Elfyn Evans is seeking his first World Rally Championship title after finishing overall runner-up five times in the last six seasons. If he prevails on Sunday, he would become Britain's third rally world champion. Evans acknowledged the challenge ahead, saying that they have to try and change the strategy a bit and see if it is enough. He added that he does not think it will be straightforward tomorrow and that today has been a tough day to try and hang in there with Oliver going so fast at the front. He emphasized that they have a long way to go and a tough day tomorrow, and that it is still wide open.

The Sardinia Rally is the final round of the season, and the championship battle is finely poised. With four stages remaining, Solberg's charge has put him in contention, but Evans's consistent season has kept him ahead. The cancellation of the Saudi Arabia finale due to regional conflict meant the title fight would be decided in Italy. The rally continues on Sunday with four stages that will determine the champion.

Championship Standings and Strategy

Going into the rally, Evans led the championship by 17 points over Pajari and 21 over Solberg. After Saturday's stages, his advantage was provisionally cut to six points over Solberg, with Pajari also in the mix. The points system rewards consistency, and with four stages left, including potential power stage points, the title could swing either way. Evans's strategy may need to adapt to Solberg's pace, as the Swede has shown strong form. Ogier, the reigning champion, is also in the fight but is focused on securing the rally win.

The final day of the Sardinia Rally will feature four stages, and the championship contenders will push to the limit. Evans will need to balance risk and reward to secure his first title, while Solberg aims to capitalize on his lead and keep the pressure on. The rally concludes on Sunday, and the world will be watching to see who emerges as the 2026 World Rally Champion.
