Solomon: New memoir educates us on Kendrick Perkins, who's more than an ex-basketball player

Former Ozen High star and 14-year NBA veteran Kendrick Perkins casts a wide net in his new memoir,"The Education of Kendrick Perkins."“The Education of Kendrick Perkins” takes readers down a winding road with twists and turns not unlike those encountered by a host of athletes and other basketball players.

Recognizing that so much history of Black people in America has been lost or untold, Perkins chose to tell his story in the context of his family history, how it fits into America, how Beaumont became what it is, and how he grew to be who he is. When Perkins was 2, his father, Kenneth Perkins, who had starred at Lamar University, left Beaumont to play basketball in New Zealand “and disappeared from my life,” Perkins said.“There are no words to describe the devastation of losing my mama,” Perkins says. “It’s not something to get over. It’s a loss I carry with me to this day.”

By the seventh grade, Perkins was playing AAU ball for Houston Hoops, then one of the top summer programs in the country. The book doesn’t go into detail of those younger playing days. Perkins led Ozen High School to three straight state championship games, averaging 27.5 points, 16.4 rebounds and nearly eight blocks a game as a senior in 2003.He learned to be an excellent defender, rebounder and teammate. How else could he have played as long as he did while averaging just 5.4 points a game?
