As Wuhan coronavirus cases continue to increase worldwide, opposition lawmakers are calling for the passage of a bill seeking to promote the “Pilipino Official Gesture of Goodwill and Praise
” as an alternative to the traditional handshake, and the proposed National Spitting Ban Act, which seeks to prohibit spitting in public nationwide.Marikina Rep. Bayani Fernando said it is about time for the House leadership to prioritize the passage of his House Bill No. 921, which seeks to promote the simple act of gracefully laying the palm of the right hand over the center of the chest with simultaneously a slight head nod and an appropriate verbal greeting.
For her part, Senior Deputy Minority Leader and Iloilo Rep. Janette Garin urged the House committee on health, chaired by Quezon Rep. Angelina Tan, to immediately jumpstart the discussion on House Bill No. 3693 or the proposed National Spitting Ban Act. “We have to prod the committee on health to tackle this bill and pass this. This is not only the answer to coronavirus, but also to other infectious diseases,” she said.
She noted that in the Philippines, only Davao has effectively implemented an anti-spitting law that has been in force since 2010.
