Sony says it would need to raise retail prices of its PlayStation consoles if the U.S. government goes ahead with a higher tariff on Chinese-made videogame machines
By Takashi Mochizuki July 30, 2019 8:07 am ET TOKYO— Sony Corp. SNE 2.87% said it would need to raise retail prices of its PlayStation consoles if the U.S. government goes ahead with a higher tariff on Chinese-made videogame machines, warning Washington such a move would hurt U.S. consumers.
The U.S. and China are resuming talks this week to resolve their trade conflict. Last month, Sony submitted a letter to the U.S. trade representative’s office to make its case against tariffs, together with Nintendo Co. and Microsoft Corp. Contract manufacturers in China account for most PlayStation console production.
Mr. Totoki said Sony hadn’t made any decisions on how it would respond to the additional batch of tariffs because it didn’t know whether they would be imposed, but it was studying options including asking consumers to bear part of the burden. The PlayStation business is the largest single unit in the Sony conglomerate by profit, and the company is planning to introduce a next-generation console as soon as 2020. Sony has said the next console would include some new and more expensive technologies that could lift the price, even without tariffs.
