Southwest’s reinstatement of its normal schedule across the country comes ahead of a busy holiday weekend for travel
In a major turnaround following days of unprecedented mass cancellations of flights, Southwest Airlines returned to a full schedule on Friday, showing just one scrapped flight so far at San Diego International Airport.
The impact in San Diego alone was huge, given that Southwest is the airport’s single largest carrier. Over the last four days, the airline canceled 676 flights in and out of the airport, accounting for 77 percent of Southwest’s San Diego flights, FlightAware told the Union-Tribune. People check their bags as they prepare to fly with Southwest Airlines at San Diego International Airport.
Despite the harsh words for Southwest filling social media feeds during the last week, Beard’s sentiment was fairly common among those passengers interviewed Friday at the airport. Her Friday flight had been booked far in advance, and she had been hearing about canceled flights for a week. She said she was considering renting a car, but was relieved that her flight was going as scheduled on Friday. Smith said despite the stress she experienced this week, she wants to continue flying Southwest because it does not charge a fee to check luggage.
