Spotify pitches Apple lament to easy EU audience LiamWardProud
European Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager on March 14 said she takes very seriously a complaint by music streaming service Spotify about Apple.
Spotify founder and CEO Daniel Ek on March 13 said his Swedish group had filed an antitrust complaint against main rival Apple at the European Commission. Ek said the U.S. company’s App Store purposely limits choice and stifles innovation “at the expense of user experience”. Apple, whose Apple Music is Spotify’s major competitor in Europe and the United States, “acts as both a player and referee to deliberately disadvantage other app developers.”
Spotify alleges that its rival levies a 30 percent “Apple tax” on purchases made through the U.S. group’s payment system, including upgrading from Spotify’s free to premium subscription service. The Swedish group can avoid this fee by not using Apple’s payment system, but says customers are then blocked from upgrading using their mobile apps.
