A wave of anti-Muslim backlash after Sri Lanka’s Easter Sunday attacks is making its way across the country as mosques and Muslim-owned businesses are under attack
in Negombo and take refuge in an undisclosed location as mobs threaded the streets.
Glass pieces lay scattered over jewelry after the showroom owned by a Muslim trader was vandalised in Poruthota, a village in Negombo. they have had falling-outs with friends following the attacks while others reported more serious consequences - a dent in their earnings as businesses they run are boycotted or are being forced to remain closed by their community.
“This particular incident is not going to make living in Sri Lanka as a Muslim the same as we were,” Hilmy Ahamed, Vice President of the Muslim Council of Sri Lanka, told“Now people are looking at us with suspicion. Even our close friends are not as friendly as before because they feel Muslims knew about it,” Ahamed adds. But despite the suspicion cast, it is Muslim communities and their leaders who are cooperating with security forces and the government.
Sri Lanka has implemented a 'short-term' ban on the face veil for security reasons but many Muslims are concerned that it might extend into a long-term policy that will further marginalise Muslims in the country.
