Hammond Mayor Tom McDermott Jr. said at the time that the driver of the vehicle was in fact an off-duty Hammond police officer who was in his own personal car heading home, and he insisted the officer did nothing wrong. McDermott was glad to see it. He said the Hammond police officer who was involved in the incident is a 13-year veteran of the department.
