The incident, which unfolded on Sunday, prompted a swift response from the Singapore Police Force, including the activation of the Singapore Armed Forces' Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Explosive Defence Group (CBRE).
Initial reports indicated a potential threat, leading to access restrictions and heightened security measures at the church. These measures were implemented to ensure public safety while authorities investigated the situation and assessed the nature of the suspicious item. The incident caused considerable concern within the community, given the sensitive nature of the potential threat and the vulnerability of places of worship.\Preliminary investigations revealed that the item, initially perceived as an IED, comprised three cardboard rolls and wires taped together with black tape. Crucially, the police confirmed that the item contained no explosive elements. The volunteer, who allegedly claimed to have discovered the item in a drain within the church compound, was subsequently taken into custody for questioning. Witnesses reported seeing the man being questioned by investigators and crime scene specialists documenting the scene. The police also conducted searches, including a white multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) parked at the church carpark. The police lifted all access restrictions at approximately 5:15 PM, signaling the conclusion of the immediate threat assessment and the resumption of normal activities.\Following the incident, Acting Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs Associate Professor Faishal Ibrahim addressed the matter, emphasizing the importance of maintaining safety and harmony within places of worship. He stated that such incidents are unsettling and must be taken seriously, highlighting the need for vigilance in safeguarding social cohesion. Assoc Prof Faishal called upon the Malay/Muslim community to stand in solidarity with the Christian community in the wake of the incident, reinforcing the importance of interfaith understanding and mutual support. St Joseph's Church announced on its Facebook page that masses would resume on Monday, indicating a return to normalcy and a commitment to providing a safe environment for its congregants.
