WATCH: Indonesian police fired tear gas as fans stormed the football pitch inside the Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malang city in East Java, after a match on Saturday night

JAKARTA: More than 170 people were killed and 180 injured in a stampede and riot at a football match in Indonesia, officials said on Sunday , in one of the world's worst stadium disasters. The stadium had been been filled beyond capacity, said Indonesia's chief security minister Mahfud MD. In an Instagram post, he said 42,000 tickets had been issued for a stadium that was meant to hold 38,000 people.

Two police officers were among the dead, the police chief said, adding that 34 people died inside the stadium and the rest died in hospital. Indonesian President Joko Widodo said authorities must thoroughly evaluate security at matches, adding that he hoped this would be"the last soccer tragedy in the nation".

PSSI secretary general Yunus Nusi said that FIFA had requested a report on the deadly incident and a PSSI team had been sent to the site to investigate. There have been previous outbreaks of trouble at matches in Indonesia, with a strong rivalry between clubs sometimes leading to violence among supporters.
