Despite a dozen attempts, Hollywood will not get Stephen King’s horror classic The Children of the Corn right until they make some key changes.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT While author Stephen King has had an abundance of his novels adapted into movies and television series, to varying degrees of success, one particular Stephen King movie, Children of the Corn, has never had a good adaptation, despite a dozen tries, due to some major creative differences. The Children of the Corn film franchise first begin in 1984 with the titular film, Children of the Corn.

The trouble of changing King's original story began in 1984 with the first Children of the Corn. While the movie follows the general outline of King's story, it makes some major changes, especially at the end. Although Burt and Vicky are captured by the children in the deserted town, they are not immediately killed like they are in the story. In actuality, according to the film, Burt and Vicky manage to evade being murdered, and instead, convince the children to run away from the cult.

Stephen King's "Children of the Corn" is actually quite horrifying, and if the movies had remained true to the story, they could have been too. In the story, Vicky's death is quite brutal, and there is really no lack of violence throughout the text. Furthermore, the fact that the story implies that the children are creating offspring is a disturbing idea all on its own. Finally, the story's ending carries so much dread that it is impossible to not feel a twinge of horror.

An additional problem is that each installment only got worse in quality. Although the first and second movies were not very well received, the franchise inexplicably continued, releasing seven more films direct-to-video. These films completely lacked continuity with the first films in the franchise, and essentially went off on their own tangents, only loosely inspired by King's writings. In the end, this was a dire move for the franchise.
