“I made up my mind that I was going to greet them with open arms, and I went out as if it was a celebration,” said Craik School principal.
At the same time, Craik School principal Charla Edwards was on the phone with the vice-principal of Springfield Collegiate, who was trying to arrange a safe place for her students to wait out the weather.make room for a few dozen more“I quickly called my staff down to say that we were increasing by 47 students, which they all cheered and laughed and thought was great,” she said.
School staff leaped into action, coordinating everything from name tags and gym activities to wifi and access to the school phones, so students could call home and let their families know where they were. Edwards, who decided to spend the night at the school with the students and their chaperones “just in case,” said it couldn’t have gone better.
“It was great for our students,” said Edwards. “Every once in a while, we’ll get a band that stops in, but it was really nice to have this — especially because we just finished a unit on playing recorders. So they got to see a whole new world of instruments.” As the weather cleared and the road conditions improved, the band students returned safely to Manitoba.
