‘This was all about not giving up’; Burn survivor from San Marcos arson fire earns college degree
AN ANGELO — Zachary Sutterfield stood in the midst of a large crowd outside the arena at Angelo State University, wearing his graduation cap and gown.
“It always seemed like something that was so far away or it was never going to happen or just one more class,” he said. “And standing on that stage, walking up the little ramp to the graduation podium and then seeing the crowd — it was so surreal.” Angelo State also granted Zachary a disability designation that allowed him more time to take some tests and let him remain a full-time student while taking only two classes, or six hours of instruction, per semester. Like all Texas students, he had to complete 120 hours of course instruction to earn his bachelor’s degree.“Mom was the medic, and Dad was the teacher,” he said. “The degree says my name on it. … I could not have gotten it without them.
The graduation was followed by a party for Sutterfield at a nearby hotel. Guests raised glasses for congratulatory toasts, some danced to loud music and everyone watched as Sutterfield cut into a cake. Sounds of joyful conversation and laughter filled the room.
