For Canadian entrepreneur Carinne Chambers\u002DSaini, her brand DivaCup is about more than making menstrual cups mainstream.
Founded more than 20 years ago with her mother, Chambers-Saini says they shared a “vision to offer a better, more sustainable menstrual care option.” Since then, she has worked to use her brand platform to advocate for paid menstrual leave and increase awareness about broader “period poverty and menstrual equity.”Q: For those who aren’t familiar, what is DivaCup?DivaCup is a menstrual cup made of medical-grade silicone.
Q: Menstruation isn’t a topic often discussed. Why has this been the case — and why is it so important to see it change? There is a huge history of stigma tied to menstruation that can be traced throughout human history. We’ve attached so many taboos to this life-giving, natural bodily function and silenced so many conversations that even in 2022 talking about periods is still seen as revolutionary. Which is mind-blowing.
In 2019 Diva executive produced the documentary Pandora’s Box: Lifting the Lid on Menstruation that highlights the huge impact that period poverty has across the world and this year we made it freely available on YouTube to help support the education of these issues. Period poverty and menstrual equity continue to be huge global issues of inequity and talking about periods is the first step in eradicating them.
