DC's new Superman, Jon Kent, seems to be manifesting new powers, but they might be leading him towards a dark future once predicted in Super Sons. In that dark future, Jon lacks control of his Super Flare power, turning him into a living bomb.
DC's latest Superman, Jon Kent, seems to be manifesting new powers, and they might be leading him towards a dark future. Jon typically has the same power set as his father and the original Superman, Clark Kent. When Jon was still Superboy, however, he discovered one major power his father never manifested at the same level: an emotion-based solar flare, and it has the potential to destroy Jon's world.
Prior to becoming Superman in Clark Kent's time off-world, Jon Kent operated as Superboy, often in a team with Damian Wayne as part of the Super-Sons title. In one of their adventures, a crossover called "Super Sons of Tomorrow," a dark version of Damian's brother Tim Drake arrives from the future with an ominous premonition: Jon Kent would kill millions of people, and Tim is determined to end Jon before he has the chance.
Jon has notoriously struggled with his powers throughout Superman: Son of Kal-El, especially as he grows stronger by the day—sometimes even out-pacing his father, the original Superman. Jon's human heritage makes some of his power set a thrilling mystery, especially when he begins to lose control of those powers. This moment in Son of Kal-El #15 could very well be pointing to his latent and destructive empathic solar flare, which has the power to flatten entire cities.
Luckily, Jon won't have to struggle alone, as the original Superman will soon be returning to his mantle, his city, and his family in the upcoming "Kal-El Returns" crossover event. If Jon is about to manifest new and dangerous powers, he'll need his father at his side to guide him through the darkness. Superman's dark fate still looms, but soon he'll have another Superman in his corner.
