Supervisors Aaron Peskin and Ahsha Safaí are leading the charge against a Rec and Park proposal that would build a new harbor in front of the Marina Green
City leaders are joining the Marina District's ongoing fight against a plan to build a new harbor in front of San Francisco's iconic Marina Green.
The new harbor project stems from a $190 settlement that The City and PG&E agreed to in January 2021 over the toxic waste in the East Harbor from an old coal gasification plant. The Water Board determined that 15% was a safe amount to clean up as the only areas of the Bay that are of concern are the parts where the toxic material from the plant is exposed to the surface, mainly just outside of the East Harbor.
But it’s not just the contamination or even the obstruction of the view that is concerning to some. Chrissy Kaplan has operated the fuel dock at Gashouse Cove since 1969, and for her, this boils down to safety. Capp Street barriers to become permanent fix despite local skepticism Barriers installed on the street meant to be a temporary solution to the traffic caused by sex work and trafficking are now going to be made permanent
Her fueling dock is also integral to several agencies that use it in times of emergency, including during the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989.Peskin and Safai have stepped in to represent the community’s opposition to the project after District 2 Supervisor Catherine Stefani recused herself from the negotiations on the advice of the City Attorney’s office due to the fact that she has a boat in the Marina.
