More people in Singapore are experiencing dementia symptoms at an earlier age, according to the National Neuroscience Institute.
Young-onset dementia refers to dementia that develops in people below the age of 65. SINGAPORE: About half of Singaporeans are not likely to get tested for young-onset dementia, even if they notice themselves showing symptoms like forgetfulness and difficulty with familiar tasks.

The institute has seen people as young as 40 being diagnosed with dementia. Young Onset Dementia refers to dementia affecting people aged 65 and below.
Other reasons included not seeing a need for testing , being confident in their own well-being and health , and dementia not being a hereditary trait in the family .The survey findings were discussed by a panel comprising NNI's head of service and consultant Chiew Hui Jin, Changi General Hospital senior consultant and psychiatrist Vanessa Mok, Dementia Singapore's CEO Jason Foo and Milieu Insight's head of research Nigel Lin.
The condition of patients with young-onset dementia tends to deteriorate faster compared to dementia in elderly patients, he said. Respondents ranked employment as the area of life that would be most impacted by a diagnosis of young-onset dementia, followed by relationships , financial stability , personal care , life management and hobbies and interests .
