A suspect arrested in a Denver homicide is being held for investigation of first-degree murder, police said.
Security video from a business in the area shows a man pushing a bike while holding a large knife in his right hand, according to an arrest affidavit in the case. The man leans the bicycle against a pole and then walks out of the camera view. Several seconds go by and the man returns into camera view, running back to the bicycle and holding the knife. The victim is seen chasing the suspect, holding his side. The bicyclist flees, while the victim tries to use his cell phone and then lies down.
On Tuesday, police investigators looked at additional HALO camera footage from the area, which shows the suspect riding southbound on Federal Boulevard, then westbound on West Colfax Avenue, according to the affidavit. Investigators interviewed several people in the area of the incident and were told that the suspect is known as “Weddo.” Investigators then talked with someone who said that Weddo’s first name is Lorenzo, and that he shops at a local liquor store. Investigators used surveillance images from the liquor store to identify “Lorenzo” as Hernandez. A tip to police on Tuesday placed Hernandez in a park near West Alameda Avenue and South Newton Street and officers responded to the park.
The Denver Office of the Medical Examiner will identify the victim after the family has been notified and will determine the cause and manner of death. The police investigation will be submitted to the Denver District Attorney’s Office for filing of charges, if any.
