Suspected hit-and-run crash seriously injures motorcyclist near Liberty Station [Breaking]
A motorcycle rider suffered life-threatening injuries Tuesday evening when he slammed into an SUV whose driver turned into his path on Rosecrans Street near Liberty Station, San Diego police said.
The SUV driver allegedly fled the crash scene, but a witness followed him about half a mile and alerted police to his location, according to Sgt. Kevin Gibson. Officers arrested the driver on suspicion of hit-and-run related charges. The collision occurred about 5:30 p.m. as the men were heading in opposite directions on Rosecrans Street, Gibson said in a news released. The 31-year-old victim, riding a 2016 Suzuki DR-Z400SM motorcycle, was heading south.
The other driver, a 56-year-old man behind the wheel of a 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, was headed north on Rosecrans when he attempted a left turn onto Oliphant Street, Gibson said. He turned in front of the motorcyclist, who collided with the front of the SUV.Paramedics took the injured rider to a hospital with life-threatening wounds that included fractures to multiple ribs, his upper left arm and both bones in his lower left leg, Gibson said. He also suffered internal injuries.
A witness followed the SUV’s driver a short distance up a hill and into a nearby neighborhood, where police took him into custody near Plum and Keats streets, Gibson said. The man’s name and the exact charges he faces were not immediately released, and the crash remained under investigation Tuesday night by the San Diego police traffic division.
