Netflix’s Take Care of Maya dives deep into the story of Maya Kowalski, who was 10 years old when she was taken away from her parents, Beata and Jack.
The Netflix documentary, Take Care of Maya, focuses on the events that led up to the state of Florida taking Maya Kowalski away from her parents, Beata and Jack, and the aftermath of the tragic ordeal. The film, which the streaming service released on June 19, 2023, recounts the challenges the family faced in 2015 and 2016 when their daughter, Maya, got sick. Maya was just nine years old when the issues with her health began, but the story only got more complicated as time continued.

Unfortunately, multiple doctor and hospital visits resulted in no answers. Since Beata was not only a determined mother but a nurse, she was determined to find the cause of her daughter's pain.
Maya's Mother, Beata Kowalski, Was Accused Of Having Munchausen By Proxy Dr. Anthony Kirkpatrick diagnosed Maya with complex regional pain syndrome in 2015, a neurological disorder that can make people experience excruciating pain from the lightest of touches. He recommended a ketamine coma to treat her symptoms, and the Kowalski family flew to Mexico in November 2015 for the procedure.
The Kowalskis' request made alarm bells ring in the hospital staff's heads, and after the low dosages of ketamine didn't work, they promptly alerted child protective services. In turn, Beata was accused of child abuse and Munchausen syndrome by proxy, now known as factitious disorder imposed on another . They believed that Beata was making Maya sick on purpose, so the state of Florida took Maya into their custody, where she remained for months.
In an email, Beata wrote, "Please take care of Maya and tell her how much I love her every day. I'm sorry but I no longer can take the pain being away from Maya and being treated like a criminal. I cannot watch my daughter suffer in pain and keep getting worse." Shortly following Beata's death, the state released Maya back into Jack's custody.
