Remember what drives you
It is important to have an understanding of what motivates you, but not only because of how it makes you feel—at a time when we are less and less likely to maintain one job for the length of our lives, it is critical that we are making smart career decisions by knowing when we are career shifting, and when we are career drifting.
Career shifting is when you are connecting what drives you with your career goals, talents, strengths and skills, using them as a basis for moving seamlessly from one opportunity to the next. Career drifting is, as it sounds, moving along aimlessly with no bigger vision or sense of meaning. When trying to find what motivates us so we can chart a clearer course in life, we are often told to write purpose statements. While that sounds good, it can be an exercise that leads to frustration.
The problem is that since we became so good at viewing our lives through the lens of our college majors and our job titles, we have no idea how to take a broader view without all of the filters that brought us to where we are right now. What we need is a different strategy, one that begins with first stepping outside of our limited perspective, then finding the patterns that driveto our careers in a way that rejuvenates us and clarifies our vision for our career.
