2. We walk into the theater lobby and it’s … fine? There are Taylor Swift posters in most of the displays, suggesting she’s the only show in town. The “Paw Patrol” cutout in the corner says otherwise. A few party streamers are taped up, a couple of balloons are positioned next to one poster for a basic photo-op. Maybe there will be more over the weekend, or maybe this surprise Thursday release caught even the theaters a bit off-guard.
7. We get to our seats in the mostly empty theater and discover the bracelet traders are in our row. Kindred spirits! They are ready for it, we are ready for it. I breathlessly attack a bag of Reese’s Pieces.9. It’s a little warm in the theater, so my wife removes her Taylor Swift brand-official “Speak Now” re-release purple cardigan. If this means nothing to you, that’s okay. She wears a Taylor Swift brand-official “Eras Tour” t-shift beneath it.
15. “Let me see your hands!” Swift commands on screen, as SoFi fans wave their arms back and forth to “You Need to Calm Down.” Viewers in the theater, myself included, follow suit. There is no ego in this place, only communal joy. Such is the glory of the Swiftie fan base. Cool indifference does not exist. The bigger the nerdy commitment, the better.
20. For “Marjorie,” a touching tribute to Swift’s late grandmother, fans at SoFi turn on their phone flashlights. So do we and our theater-mates. No shame. 25. Musically, the rock guitars of “Look What You Made Me Do” really explode in the mix, too. There was no discerning them inside MetLife Stadium, fans only got the bass thump.26. In the “Red” era, I missed the throttling rock rendition of “We are Never, Ever Getting Back Together” from the “1989″ tour in 2015. Maybe it returns next time, if this tour ever ends .
