My 17-year-old attended two schools in San Antonio Independent School District for the past 12 years. One important financial fact about SAISD is that it is a high-poverty district. Ninety percent of families qualify for free or reduced lunch, and fully 50 percent of students come from families that qualify for extra state resources because of their low socioeconomic status.

Her high school classroom experience was approximately four times as rigorous as my own in the late 1980s in a relatively affluent public high school in Massachusetts.
