In a series of votes that scrambled the usual political lines in the Senate on Thursday, Cruz and a handful of other Republicans backed an unsuccessful amendment by Sanders to add seven sick days to a compromise labor agreement Congress is scrambling to pass to avoid a rail strike. The amendment failed to draw the necessary 60 votes to pass, with U.S. Sen. John Cornyn of Texas among those opposing it.

"Given that Congress voted down our amendment and decided to step into these negotiations, I believe the rail workers are making reasonable requests that should be adequately addressed," Cruz said in a statement."For that reason, I voted to increase the number of paid sick days for rail workers."The compromise labor agreement, brokered by the Biden administration, now heads to the president's desk.
