CHICAGO: An intensifying heat wave descended on the eastern United States on Thursday , prompting warnings about the dangers presented by the sweltering heat and humidity in the final days of a record-smashing July around the world.
Officials in New York City, Washington DC, Philadelphia and other big cities urged people to avoid working or playing outside, to drink plenty of fluids and to check on loved ones and neighbors. Cooling centres have also been opened across New York City for those who do not have access to air conditioning. The heat index could reach 39.4 degrees Celsius on Friday in the most populous US city.
The florists put their plants out front to draw in customers, but right now only the potted plants like cacti and tall, leafy, snake plants can stand the heat. Biden said he has asked acting Labor Secretary Julie Su to issue a heat hazard alert, clarifying federal heat-related protections for workers.
Biden also said the federal government was taking several other steps to address the weather crisis, including the US Forest Service awarding more than US$1 billion in grants to help municipalities plant trees.
