The Pentagon ordered an additional 1,000 troops to the Middle East as tensions with Iran continue to escalate
Fire and smoke billows from a Norwegian-owned Front Altair tanker said to have been attacked in the waters of the Gulf of Oman on June 13, 2019.Tensions between the U.S. and Iran continued to mount Monday, as the Pentagon officially ordered more U.S. troops to the Middle East in response to alleged attacks from Iran.
Monday's troop authorization will be in addition to 1,500 troops that were previously deployed to the region in May. The news comes as the U.S. points the blame at Iran for recent attacks on oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman, releasing just before the troop deployment announcement to bolster their argument that Iran was behind the tanker blasts. Shanahan cited Iran's alleged role in the oil tanker blasts as a reason behind the troop deployment, saying in his statement, “The recent Iranian attacks validate the reliable, credible intelligence we have received on hostile behavior by Iranian forces and their proxy groups that threaten United States personnel and interests across the region.
Iran's tensions with the U.S. and broader international community have been continuing to intensify since Presidentwithdrew the U.S. from the Iran nuclear deal and imposed crippling economic sanctions in an effort to force new negotiations.
