Texans approved $35 billion in construction projects, the most of any state
Excavator Operator, Marco Torres, 45, works with fellow SER Construction workers to install a new underground water pipe at the intersection of North Durham Drive and West 20th Street on Thursday, October 27, 2022 in Houston, Texas. The work is part of the Memorial Heights Redevelopment Authority’s Shepherd Durham Project, that will improve infrastructure, landscaping and build bike lanes and side walks along the Shepherd Durham corridor.
Experts said the explosion of borrowing for infrastructure in Texas was largely a product of population growth and the pandemic. Many projects were delayed during the worst days of the COVID-19 crisis.Houston will ask voters to OK $478M bond issue for new animal shelter, public safety vehicles “For the most part, most states are in really good shape right now financially," said John Diamond, who studies public finance at Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy."So I think they’re looking for ways to put their money to work, and they feel like they’ve got the resources right now to fund these longer-term projects.”
Of the 228 project proposals on the ballot, 188 were approved by voters — a success rate of 82 percent. The rejected projects would have totaled another $2 billion of spending.
