WASHINGTON — While House Republicans continue negotiating over who will be the next speaker, Texas Democrats are recognizing the anniversary of the Jan. 6...
“The investigation conducted by the bipartisan January 6th Committee produced a clear body of evidence that Donald Trump and his associates bear responsibility for the deadly attack on the Capitol,” San Antonio Democrat Joaquin Castro said. “Democracy is fragile, and as Americans it is our moral and civic duty to uphold the Constitution and ensure nothing like this ever happens again.”
Fort Worth Democrat Marc Veasey said he hadn’t envisioned the speaker fight going on this long. He drew comparisons to the division in the country and Republican Party on display now, and during and before the Civil War —“I just don’t think there’s any surprise that we’re where we’re at today,” Veasey said. “We should get on our knees and thank God every day that we have a functioning democracy because we obviously cannot take it for granted.
“We will remind them of the dysfunction that led to January 6, that same dysfunction that seemingly is continually permeating through this house,” Crockett said.In nominating Jeffries as speaker for the 13th ballot, Rep. Veronica Escobar also invoked the anniversary of the attack.
