Texas HBCU students face some of the highest loan debts. Biden's plan could help them the most.

Students graduating from Texas’ two public Historically Black College and Universities have some of the highest amounts of student-loan debt in the state, according to data from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

There are nine HBCUs in Texas, but Texas Southern University and Prairie View A&M are the only public four-year institutions in the group. In 2021, the schools had the highest percentages of students graduating with debt among public universities in the state – 80% of Texas Southern bachelor’s students and 71% of Prairie View A&M bachelor’s students graduated with debt.

Compounding student loan debt for both their children and themselves can trap many families in a cycle of debt that can be difficult to escape.
