While there was no public testimony Monday, people representing public and private school interests were invited to testify “There isn't that accountability that there is in public education, and being a bilingual teacher, I especially have this perspective, you know. We need people who are speaking different languages, who are accommodating children who have different needs, and I feel that public education is the best place for that to happen,” Dominguez told Spectrum News 1.
The revision before committee members would also replace the statewide tests for academic assessment, which some critics called an attempt to sweeten the pot for hesitant Republicans. Hardline supporters of school choice tried to call out some of the administrators testifying against the bill for not meeting certain readiness standards themselves.
The version debate would have only applied to students at campuses rated with low academic performance or who are living with a disability. Despite the proposed program applying to far fewer students, some Republicans remained skeptical.
