This is where the Texas Lottery sales money went after another record-breaking year.

announced that sales reached $8.2 billion

Annual lottery sales were $8.1 billion last year, representing a 63 percent increase over the previous five years. The agency credited much of the increase to two major industry milestones — the launch of the U.S. lottery industry’s first $100 ticket and an advertised $1.2 billion Mega Millions jackpot drawing in July.

The lottery was approved by Texas voters in 1991 through a constitutional amendment. Just 24 percent of the proceeds go toward public education. Only 0.3 percent goes toward veteran organizations. The lottery keeps 3.3 percent to cover administrative costs. This year, a record net contribution of $1.9 billion went toward Texas schools, according to the Texas Lottery Commission. In 2021, the Legislature budgeted $46.5 billion in state funds for public education over two years.

The many scratch-off games, which range in price from $1 to $100, generated $6 billion in the past year, a 1.7 percent increase from a year earlier. The $20 Million Supreme has been the No. 1 selling scratch ticket every week since its launch on May 16.
