Though planned for nearly 20 years, concerns intensified five years ago, when groups such as Air Alliance Houston, LINKHouston and Stop TxDOT I-45 organized toand avoid any additional freeway widening. Opponents of the project on Tuesday reiterated a variety of concerns, ranging from its displacement of mostly minority communities north and east of Houston’s central business district to environmental concerns such as air quality around the freeway and TxDOT’s lack of direct action on climate change. TxDOT’s analysis of air quality effects for the project states that by allowing traffic to flow freely will reduce pollution, though the number of vehicles using the freeway will increase.
