'I need to do something about it': Texas teens tackle dating violence prevention at Capitol training
that teaches teenagers how to become leaders in their communities and spread awareness about dating violence.
First-time attendees to the event held during Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month learned about the dynamics of healthy relationships — respecting boundaries, celebrating each other’s successes, trusting one another and treating a partner as an equal. Think Ben and Leslie, the power couple from “Parks and Recreation,” or Cece and Jess, the best friend duo from “New Girl.”
In another session, the freshmen heard from Barry Bales, a clinical professor of public policy practice at the University of Texas at Austin’s Executive Master in Public Leadership program. He gave them the same advice he offers his mid-career master’s students: treat everyone with respect, focus on the positive, do your homework and be the kind of follower you would want to lead.
The last time one attendee learned about sex education in school, she was in the fifth grade. The speakers mainly told the students not to take nude photos of themselves, she said, and advised them not to “act like a porn star.” The teens wrapped up the day with a rundown on marketing, since they’ll all help fundraise for TAP over the next five months, and a dating violence simulation, where they mimicked real-life scenarios and practiced identifying unsafe situations.
