A spider monkey found a home in Florida after a Texas woman tried to smuggle it into the U.S. in March.A 20-year-old Texas woman has pleaded guilty after trying to smuggle a spider monkey in a box she said contained beer.
Savannah Nicole Valdez of Katy tried to smuggle the spider monkey in March at the Gateway International Bridge in Brownsville, Customs officials noticed a wooden box with holes inside her car as she tried to cross the border. Valdez said the box contained beer she had bought in Mexico.Valdez, who was referred for a second inspection, sped off, ran a traffic light and nearly struck officers and other vehicles, the release said.Later that same day, federal official saw multiple postings online advertising a spider monkey for sale in the Katy and Houston areas with Valdez’s phone number listed.
She turned herself in on March 28. The monkey was recovered and placed with an animal shelter in the Central Florida, the release said.
