By the time George Carlin had quipped that “Beer Nuts” was the official disease of Milwaukee, or Norm had been told by his bar buddy Cliff at Cheers that his breath smelled “like Milwaukee,” the reputation of this medium-sized Midwestern city had long been solidified. And there’s certainly something to that notion of Milwaukee as a beer and shot and sausage town. There is a bar on almost every corner.
There is Usinger’s and Miller. You’re never far from a bag of cheese curds. But now, there’s plenty of Mexican, too. And food trucks. There are Middle Eastern restaurants and food halls, craft coffee, Neapolitan pizza, Peruvian, James Beard nominations, small plates, and pho. There’s the hippest Chinese restaurant imaginable. Also, yes, there are pierogies. And, of course, sausage.
