Days later, coach Vlatko Andonovski stepped down as coach, leaving every U.S. fan wondering: 'Was this tournament a bump in the road or is this the end of an era for the most successful women's international football team?' The former director of football operations at Premier League side Southampton is the man at the centre of the women's national team's long-term strategy at a pivotal moment for American soccer, with the men's tournament coming stateside in 2026.
"There’s been a lot of great work that has been done by the sporting staff on the women’s side of the game at U.S. Soccer, which means we are starting from a position of strength," Crocker said after Margkraf's departure.Andonovski, who previously coached in the National Women's Soccer League , had no international experience before taking the helm for the U.S.
But fans looking for a glimmer of hope from the Americans' dismal campaign can look to the younger players.
