Grace McLean first learned about Hildegard von Bingen, the visionary 12th-century composer, author, inventor and saint, when McClean was in college, studying Medieval art.
. A Lincoln Center Theater/LCT3 production, the show is currently playing at the Claire Tow Theater and features features Rachael Duddy, Ashley Pérez Flanagan, Mia Pak, Hannah Whitney and McLean.centers on Hildegard’s childhood when she was locked in a cell with Jutta. Both of them are trying to heal from traumas they endured from the outside world. Being cut off from the world gave them safety.
Brunner: The music is fascinating and so complex, yet also feels very pure and simple. How would you describe the music and looping?I took a cue from Hildegard and decided that I didn’t need to know everything about music in order to write a show about her. But I did know that I wanted to incorporate some of her music. Any time there is Latin in the show, that’s a Hildegardian composition but with my own flavor and arrangements.
I’ve also found a deeper love and respect for the creative process, now that I have made something of my own. I’ve spent much of my professional life as a cog in someone else’s wheel, but to be the creator of the wheel and to see people come to me and work for and with me has filled me with so much gratitude for the work and generosity of everyone who ever joins anyone’s project.
