In a new HBO documentary, 'The Ringleader,' the woman who allegedly masterminded the infamous Bling Ring gives her most candid interview ever.
. “I’m a very, very proud true-crime filmmaker,” Carr says, “but don’t you ever just need to get away from the absolute darkness?”
As someone admittedly “obsessed with the 2000s,” Carr started her anti-darkness search by thinking about cases from that era that she could put her own spin on. The Bling Ring checked all the boxes. “And when I got Rachel, everything clicked into place.”often feels like an intimate conversation between documentarian and subject, especially given how often we hear Carr’s voice pushing back at some of Lee’s explanations, or nudging her away from remarks that seem less believable.
Rather than simply allowing Lee to be an unquestioned and unreliable narrator, Carr “tried to very carefully explain and show that this person is trying their best, but they’ve had to lie to themselves for many, many years,” she says. “And so, yeah, you’re gonna have a really complex relationship with the truth.”
Carr has made several films about complicated, idiosyncratic women we think we understand; in the course of watching, however, we realize how wrong our assumptions were. She’s hoping viewers have a similar reaction to the Rachel Lee they meet inThe Real Bling Ring: Hollywood Heist“My sincere hope is that she’s able to use this and release the shame,” Carr says. But the director also hopes that, withLee might finally be understood. “We are not equal to our best or worst action,” Carr says.
