An uptick in pediatric hospitalizations has been linked to severe respiratory illness.

The CDC recommends seeing a health care provider if you have difficulty breathing or if you have gnarly respiratory symptoms that don’t let up; for reference, a nasty cold tends to last for, so if your illness goes much further than that, it’s worth checking in with a doctor to figure out what’s going on. A health care provider can do a swab test—similar to the COVID-19 PCR test you’re likely familiar with—to determine whether you or your child is sick with EV-D68, Dr. Javaid says.

Because of this, it’s vital to stay home anytime you’re sick, even if you’re only dealing with mild, cold-like symptoms, Dr. Javaid says. When you go out while sick—to a party, to work, to a family gathering—you run the risk of infecting others with whatever bug you have. “Stay out of work if you have a respiratory illness, even if it’s not COVID,” Dr. Javaid stresses.
