'There are things that we are all benefitting from whether or not you consider yourself LGBTQ. People who do, this is your history. For those of us who don’t, it is still our history. These people were fighting battles for all of us.'

[according to 2015 statistics]. They are not making the news because there is racism involved in coverage and our ignorance of what is going on now. As much as we have made progress on some of the homophobia that first cast this whole epidemic in its shadow, the issue now is largely affectingin cities like Washington, DC, and Atlanta. The racism has stepped in where the homophobia has left off, and we are ignoring it again.

That era that I am writing about is when people were fighting with everything for their rights, for the people who survived. They were being utterly ignored by the government, they were being ostracized, they were being marginalized. And if we put aside the issue of AIDS, that issue is going to occur again and again in our world. People in power always are going to ignore the most disenfranchised people who most need their help.

And then there were other cities where there was not that support, where the population of gay men was so small that they didn’t have networks, or they made interesting grassroots things work. There is so much to be learned from all of this, and when we try to tell the most universal story, we lose a lot of that nuance.
