Andrew Forrest paused for breath to talk to The Australian Financial Review about why, when most CEOs who came to COP26 last year are skipping COP27 this year, he has doubled down.
After being everywhere at COP26 in chilly Glasgow last November, Andrew Forrest, Fortescue Metals Group’s billionaire major shareholder, isin the Egyptian resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh. And it’s hard to ignore how big his juggernaut has become.
He was also part of a formal COP leaders’ roundtable on green hydrogen, rubbing shoulders with the likes of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, and the heads of 20 countries from Europe and Africa.Hans van Leeuwen about why – when most CEOs who came to COP26 last year were skipping COP27 this year – he had doubled down. There aren’t as many Australian business people who came to COP in Glasgow last year [who are] here in Sharm el-Sheikh this year.
If they don’t do those three things, they’re not looking after their shareholders, they’re not looking after the community. And they’re certainly not looking after their children’s future. In short, they’re just being lazy.Is there a particular aspect of the climate crisis that is exercising you at this COP27, or are you working on all fronts?
So you’re looking at those sorts of deals, and you’re not here necessarily to try and influence the shape of the negotiations between the leaders?Advertisement I challenge those business leaders, like every business leader in the world, to give your customers choice: to supply the energy they need not from children’s-futures-destroying fossil fuel, but give your consumers the choice to consume from renewable energy.
